[Vol. 70] Hairstyles

Yamapi has been going to hair salons since elementary school, when his mother would bring him. Enjoy his tales of hair disasters and girly hairstyles, along with a rare timeline of his style history!

These days, there are professional hair and makeup stylists available when I go to work, so it's no problem if my hair doesn't look great in the morning. When I was in elementary school, though, I was very self-conscious about my hair, and I didn't like going to school on bad hair days. My hair was pretty short then, so if I had bedhead or it looked messy, it wasn't easy to fix. I would go to school in a bad mood and wet my hair in the sink once I got there, but my friends would tease me for trying too hard to look cool. That was such a long time ago! (laugh) It's true, though, that I really wanted to be cool.

The first time I dyed my hair was when I was in junior high. I did it myself, so I didn't really know what it would look like when it was done. I was really surprised when I finally saw myself in the mirror. It was really different, and exciting, too. I didn't have any particular reason to change my hair color. I think that I also got a piercing around that time. I just wanted to do something new. My friends at school were all really surprised, and my teachers scolded me. My mom didn't say anything about it, so I thought I got off lucky.

In the past, when summer came, I'd want to dye my hair lighter or change the style, but lately I only go to the hair salon when I notice that my hair has grown out a lot. Going to get my hair done isn't a high priority for me compared to other things. Unless I have drama or movie work, it's not that I want to grow my hair out, so much as it is that I just let it be.

There are a lot of things I've tried that, in retrospect, were bad ideas. I won't tell you which, though, because I don't want everyone to be able to look back and see which the mistakes were. At the time, I chose those styles because I thought they looked cool. Before meeting a stylist who meshed well with my preferences, I made a lot of small mistakes. I have memories of going to hair salons as far back as elementary school with my mom, but I think most of the stylists I've gone to tended to cut my hair too short. I would ask them to cut just a little bit, but even so they would cut off a ton. I think that my mom probably didn't want to take me that often, so she would ask them to cut my hair really short... anyway, I always ended up with really short hair!

Personally, I like longer hair on girls. I think it's more feminine than short hair, but it doesn't mean I don't fall for girls with shorter hair. Curls are cute, but I might like straight hair more. The color? Brown. Black is too... heavy. Of course, at the end it all depends on the person, so whatever suits you the most is the best way to go.

For Kurosagi, I dyed my hair blacker than its original color for the first time. I thought it was strange at first, but I got used to it in a few days. Next, I want to try... shaving my head (laugh). I'm sure it won't look good, but it seems really low maintenance! I wouldn't want my head to look blue like Katsuo from Sazae-san, though. If I were asked to cut my hair for a role, I wouldn't have any reservations about it. I really want to try shaving my head, so it'd actually be nice to get that kind of role!

In Japanese, we say "ushirogami wo hikareru" (the hair at the back of your head is being pulled) to describe feeling reluctant or torn, for example when making a decision. I get this feeling a lot when trying to decide where to eat. Choosing between, say, yakiniku and sushi, I'll first head for a yakiniku restaurant but decide that I was really in the mood for sushi. Once I'm at the restaurant, I'll let it go because I've already come that far, but it's so hard to decide. Even when I eat instant ramen, I'm very indecisive about what flavor I want! When I really can't make a decision, sometimes I eat half of both kinds.

They say that the goddess of fortune only has bangs, right? [In English: take time by the forelock] I'm pretty good at grabbing these opportunities! (laugh) It isn't that I recognize them as chances at the time, but when I look back, I realize that I definitely took advantage of a good opportunity. On the other hand, there have been times when I have firmly resisted things that other people wanted me to do. While I was still a Junior, Johnny once told me, "When did you become this headstrong?" I told him that I knew I was being stubborn, but that I didn't want to do what I didn't want to do. I think that I am always making decisions that I feel are right, even when I look back at them.

I don't have any particular worries or concerns related to hair. I am a little worried about whether or not I'm going to go bald in the future, though. My grandpa isn't exactly bald, but he doesn't have much hair on his forehead, so it looks pretty wide. His hair is short, and he keeps it all combed back. It looks good on him. He's had this hairstyle since when I was a kid! He used to be a bassist, so he would talk to me about music a lot when I was too young to really understand it. Anyway, if I can be like him when I'm older, that would be fine.

Although I may regret it, it'd be interesting to see bald Pi (maybe in a yakuza role?)

My fave hairstyles are Kenzo, movie Kurosagi, and Hadakanbou Pi. I wonder if anybody else have had as many hair changes as him...

Thanks for translating!
